Cabinteely travelled to Waterford for a clash of 7th versus 8th in the First Division. Before the game, Cabo were sitting two points ahead of Waterford in the league so this was a crucial game for both sides.

Eddie Gormley made three changes from the side that drew with Shelbourne, the suspended Conor Foley was replaced by Kevin Knight upfront, Stephen Hanley replaced the injured Peter Durrad and Sean Burke started at left back at the expense of Josh Quinlivan.

The game started at a frantic pace, inside two minutes Waterford United had squandered a one-on-one while Cabo also had a chance of their own to take the lead. Both sides traded possession for long periods of the first half with few clear cut chances to write home about until Sean Burke played Kevin Knight through on goal.

Burke beat two players before lifting a precise pass into Kevin Knight’s path to put him bearing down on goal. Knight composed himself and struck his shot well but his effort was well saved and the danger cleared. This chance seemed to spring Cabo into life and almost immediately after John McKeown went close. McKeown did well to create space at the edge of the box with a neat turn but his shot was well blocked.

It would be the last real chance of the first half for either side. Waterford had been on top in the first half so Cabo would have been happy going in at the break level, despite having a great chance to take the lead.

The second half was a better spectacle than the first with both sides now pushing for the goal that would be crucial at the foot of the table. Cabo created some brilliant chances to take the lead, first Knight squared the ball to the unmarked Hanley but he couldn’t reach the pass, Dunne saw his shot from 12 yards go over the bar and Byrne also blasted over the bar from close range. Cabo were pushing men forward to get a goal and in the end they were punished for their ambition.

With men committed forward, in the 87th minute Galvin picked up the ball in midfield and went on a mazy run that was rounded off with a strike from 25 yards that left Gillen with no chance. It was a goal of real quality from the midfielder.

Cabo went close through McKeown from range but it was not to be for Eddie Gormley’s side with the full time whistle coming soon after. Cabo are now one point behind Waterford with three games to play. We are at home against Cobh Ramblers next Friday in our penultimate home fixture, kick off is 19:45!
