Just “Wat” the doctor ordered!
Cabinteelys resurgent run of form continued in dramatic fashion in Stradbrook last evening with a late late win over Dublin rivals Shelbourne.
Backed by a large away support, Shels dominated from the off with Cabo struggling to gain and then retain possession. The first half was void of clear chances with both defenses on top and it was to be from a corner that we saw the first real chance of the game which fell to the visitors. Shels center back Derek Prendergast will feel he should have done better when he was left unmarked eight yards out however could only manage to direct a header straight at Cabo custodian, Michael Kelly. As the home side grew into the game, new signing Ryan Swan had a penalty appeal waved away while Joe Doyle almost took advantage of confusion in the Shels defense seeing the ball roll agonisingly across the six yard box and out for a goal kick ; A gamble from Doyle would have seen him put Cabo ahead.
Shels dominated once more after the restart and eight minutes into the half came close to taking the lead. The livewire that is Adam Evans cut in from the left and with Kelly stranded his low shot hit the post and was cleared to safety for the mother of all let offs for Cabo. The visitors continued to press for the lead but found former player Conor Keely and Kevin Knight once again imperious for Cabo at center back. Kelly made a fine save from a Dave O Leary free kick while a host of Shels corners and free kicks came to nothing.
Cabo at this stage were hanging on and needed fresh blood to get back into the game and it arrived in the form of Cory Galvin and debutant Gareth McCaffrey. Keely smashed a thunderous effort from 30 yards out which Dean Delany did well to touch away for a corner and this seemed to wake Cabo from their collective slumbers. As the game entered the closing stages it was the home side who finally begun to take control and there would be one final twist to come in the stoppage time.
Daire Doyle’s ball over the Shels defense found Marty Waters in space and Waters delivered an exquisite first time cross which was met on the volley by the in-rushing Jack Watson who hammered home to steal the 3 points right at the death. For Cabo, it will erase the painful memories of the first fixture in Stradbrook earlier in the season when it was Shels, who found a 94th minute winner into the same goals.
Cabo now move back up to joint 4th on 28 points with one full round of fixtures remaining with UCD away next Friday.
