Cabinteely progressed through the first round of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup with an impressive 3-1 win over South Dublin rivals UCD.

The hosts had the first chance to break the deadlock within two minutes. Clever play from Waters to make space followed by a perfectly weighted ball found Dean Casey through on the left.

His centre, though, evaded Swan whose outstretched leg was just short of turning the ball home. UCD then grew into the game and just about edged the first half. A series of corners ended with Liam Scales and Georgie Kelly heading off target.

Not too long later another couple of corners in succession saw Neil Farrgiua find Robert Manley free at the near post, only for him to head over when he really should have found the target.

Manley again had the chance to put the Students ahead after a smart cut-back from Farrgiua, but he scuffed his effort and saw his shot blocked. Cabinteely took the lead just before half time with a clinical counterattack.

Swan fed Waters through and the former UCD man still had plenty to do, but as Niall Corbet attempted to close him down Cabo’s marksman elegantly dinked the ball over the ‘keeper to open the scoring. Shortly after the restart Dolan doubled his side’s lead.

Another well-worked counterattack saw Casey through only for his effort to be well-stopped by Corbet, who could only watch on as Dolan arrived in perfect time to tap into an open goal. As the second half picked up pace, UCD pulled one back through former Cabinteely forward Hanrahan.

The Students took their turn to counterattack and Farrgiua’s precise centre found the No.10 who finished well. Almost immediately after, Cabinteely restored their two-goal advantage through Swan. Jack Watson found space in the box and deceived the defence with a cut-back, leaving Swan to send the ball beyond Corbet.
