On Friday night, Cabo travelled to take on 7th placed Athlone Town. Eddie Gormley’s side had recorded a 2-1 win against Alan Matthews’ side on the opening day of the season thanks to goals from Ben Hanrahan and Joe Doyle, Marco Chindea scored that night for Athlone, and it was Chindea who came up with the goods again on Friday night. Chindea’s hat trick was the difference between the sides last night after Cabinteely had taken the lead through Shane Boyle.
Eddie Gormley made one change to his starting team, Sean Burke came in for the suspended Lee Mitchell. Knight moved into centre back with Burke playing at left back.
Cabo started brightly and it wasn’t long before they were in the lead. After a Michael Brown free kick was headed clear, it was met by Boyle 25 yards out who hit a half volley into the far bottom left corner leaving former Cabo player Evan Moran with no chance.
Athlone responded well and they soon had a way back into the game when they were awarded a penalty after Kevin Knight was deemed to have gone in too hard for a header. Chindea converted the penalty down the middle to draw the sides level.
Karl Byrne went close for Cabo after a winding run created a shooting opportunity, his shot from outside the box looked destined for the top corner but Moran pulled out a save of real quality to deny the right back. Hanrahan also went close, his shot from wide was well saved however and the sides went in at the break level.
Michael Brown was replaced at half time by Mark Slater who went to right midfield with Joe Doyle moving to left mid.
Athlone Town took the lead soon after the break when a long ball caused a mix-up at the back when Sean Burke’s pass back to Michael Kelly was intercepted by Chindea who slotted the ball home to put Athlone in the lead.
Cabinteely had a few half chances to get the sides level but Athlone defended their lead well and soon extended it when Marco Chindea completed his hat trick. Chindea found himself through on goal and kept his composure to slot the ball into the left bottom corner past Kelly.
Up next for Cabinteely is UCD on Saturday the 30th of April at Stradbrook. Please note that this match has been moved from Friday to Saturday. Kick off is 19:45.
